Text-to-Image Models

AI that generates images from text descriptions — genuinely useful for creative work, and carrying unsettled intellectual property and brand governance questions most organizations haven't resolved.

Text-to-image models generate visual images from written descriptions. Type a prompt describing what you want — a product in a specific setting, a concept visualization, a marketing scene — and the model produces an image. The output quality has improved dramatically in recent years, making these tools genuinely useful for rapid prototyping, design exploration, marketing content, and internal visualization. Most commercial tools are accessible without specialized technical skills, which is why employees are already using them whether or not the organization has a policy.

The legal status of AI-generated imagery is unsettled in most jurisdictions: who owns the output, whether training on copyrighted images creates liability, and what disclosure obligations apply to commercial use are all questions courts and regulators are still working through. Separately, organizations have brand control and authenticity concerns: images generated without brand standards review can be off-brand or embarrassing, and audiences increasingly want to know when images are AI-generated. The most common failure mode isn't employees misusing the technology intentionally — it's the absence of any policy that would help them use it appropriately. Shadow use of consumer image generation tools is already widespread in most organizations.
