AI Copilots
An AI that works alongside the human — suggesting, drafting, and accelerating — while the human stays accountable for the result.
A copilot is an AI system embedded in a workflow that assists a person with their job — suggesting code, drafting communications, generating analyses, or proposing next steps — while the human retains final judgment and accountability. The defining feature is the pairing: the human is still doing the work, and the copilot is accelerating it. This distinguishes copilots from fully automated systems, where the AI acts without per-task human review.
Human involvement doesn't guarantee careful review. Copilots embedded in high-velocity workflows — writing code, fielding customer questions, preparing reports — can quietly lower quality if employees accept suggestions without scrutiny, especially under time pressure. Measuring adoption rather than outcomes misses this entirely. Organizations that deploy copilots without output standards, review expectations, and outcome metrics often find they've accelerated activity without improving results.
